Resources for Homschooling High School

Have you ever thought about homeschooling until high school?  Or, did you decide to homeschool high school and now you have questions?

I put together a list of resources and suggestions for those considering homeschooling high school, those who think they can't homeschool high school and those who are homeschooling high school now.

The list isn't formatted in a pretty way and it's not complete.  It's in a get-er-done format.   I'm giving a talk on this topic to my local homeschool group and I wanted them to be able to access the information easily so I hyper-linked as much as I could (as much as I had time for).   It would make more sense if you were sitting there with us I'm sure.

Please use it and share it if you find it helpful.  I hope you do.  My intent is to encourage those of you want to continue to homeschool high school and to encourage those of you who heard from somewhere that you can't homeschool high school.  Yes you can.

The question isn't whether you CAN,as in have the ability to,  homeschool high school.  The question is whether you WANT to.

SAT Prep Resources

 Most colleges now accept the SAT or ACT test for admission.  College consultants usually recommend that students take both the SAT and ACT to see if they do better on one or the other.  Then, if they want to improve their score, the recommendation is to take the test that they did better on initially.  

Do students need to take a prep course before taking the test or before taking it a second time?  That probably depends on the student.  Some students will study well on their own.  Others do better with tips they learn from a class and completing homework assignments.  Some, may do best with one-on-one tutoring.  

My son took a class and did some private tutoring.  I didn't have experience with kids taking SAT tests and I was on my own figuring out how to help him prepare for the test.  For those of you in that situation, I'd like to share some resources for SAT test prep that I found.  Some of then also help with ACT prep but this list focuses on the SAT test.
 
When we lived in the States my son could attend a local test prep class.  But, once we moved to Germany that wasn't available so I looked for resources that we could use here.  So, whether you live in the US or another country there are SAT test prep resources available.

Many students prepare for the SAT test on their own.  Some have their parents help them.  I'm sure some don't do any preparation!

PSAT, SAT, ACT Testing for Homeschoolers

Recently I asked my local homeschool group where homeschoolers take SAT/
ACT tests.  The only people who replied on our email group also wanted to know, so I'm posting this information for others who are curious.

At the bottom of this post I listed the websites for SAT and ACT test dates, sites and registration.  You need to register on the site and then choose a test date and the site will prompt you to find a location.  The tests are offered at local high schools, so you pick where you want to take the test. 

The next SAT date is 6 October and the registration deadline is 7 Sep.  (You can register late for additional fees.)

BTW, PSAT/NMSQTs are on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 or Saturday, October 20, 2012.  My son is taking it at our local high school. I contacted the guidance counselor and arranged that.  He took them there last year too.  For students to qualify for National Merit Scholarship they need to take the PSAT as a junior.
